Are waste-to-energy (WTE) incinerators really a climate solution, or are they creating a new climate problem?

A new study examining four operational WTE incinerators in Delhi reveals the climate costs of burning waste. The analysis estimates that electricity generated from the fossil fraction of waste carries a carbon intensity of 3.42 kg CO₂ per kWh — around 4.7 times the Indian grid average and 3.5 times that of coal power. In 2023, these plants incinerated an estimated 735,840 tonnes of plastic, while generating relatively little electricity.

Join us to unpack the findings, question the climate credentials of waste incineration, examine the implications for climate finance, and explore why *zero-waste systems offer a more sustainable path forward.
